Character development and possible look and vibe for post apocalyptic dream and ambiguity.
In the story, the guy’s journey to the city feels like he’s trying to get through this dark, heavy stuff inside him. He’s got his guitar, which ends up being both a weapon and an outlet, almost like he’s turning his inner turmoil into something he can control. The zombies chasing them are kind of like the overwhelming, relentless thoughts that come with depression, and every strum of his guitar blows them up, as if he’s trying to clear his mind of everything haunting him.
The girl being deaf in the story adds a powerful layer of complexity and symbolism to the theme of communication, especially within the context of the lyrics and the apocalypse setting. The idea of being "lost in transmission" becomes literal, heightening the emotional weight of the guy’s struggle to connect with her.
Both the story and song show how depression can feel like yelling into the void, hoping someone gets it. The guy’s guitar playing, in the end, is like his way of turning that inner mess into something powerful—enough to fight off his fears, even if just for a moment. It’s like both are saying that even in the middle of all that noise and confusion, there’s still hope for a real connection.
